Quick summary:
You’re scrolling through matches and you spot it: a zodiac sign under someone’s job title. Maybe you’ve already decided Scorpios are trouble, or Geminis can’t commit. Before you swipe left over a sign alone, it helps to know what that field shows you, and what astrologers mean by an astro dating red flag in the first place.
This isn’t a fringe habit in dating app astrology circles. A DatingAdvice.com survey of 504 U.S. adults found that 67% are likely to ask a date about their zodiac sign on the first date. Only 27% said they’d filtered matches by sign, and just 1 in 5 would refuse a date over it alone, according to the survey release on PRNewswire. Curiosity about a sign runs high. Swiping based on it doesn’t.
Hinge’s zodiac field is one sign, nothing more. It sits in the “My Vitals” section of a profile, next to pets and family plans, and users can hide it if they choose, per Hinge’s own help center. One sun sign is a twelfth of a birth chart. No Moon, no Rising, no Venus.
Tinder’s zodiac feature, Astrology Mode, goes further. Users enter their birth time and location, and the app calculates Sun, Moon, and Rising signs, then generates an “Overall Compatibility” breakdown, a “Cosmic Spark” score out of five, and a percentage-based “Elements Mix” for matches who also opt in, as The Everygirl reported after testing the feature. Tinder launched the feature at its March 2026 product keynote.
Early testing showed a nearly 20 percent jump in likes sent by women on Astrology Mode profiles, according to Tinder’s own press release. That test ran across Canada, Chile, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Poland, Thailand, Turkey, and South Africa, not the U.S., so the size of the effect here isn’t public yet. A dating app field is a conversation starter, not a compatibility reading, and that gap is where most zodiac dating red flags content goes wrong.
A sun sign describes a general personality style. It doesn’t describe how two specific people will get along, and that’s what synastry is for.
Synastry compares two full birth charts to see how one person’s planets line up against the other’s.. Astrologers lean most on Venus, what you’re drawn to and how you show affection, meeting Mars, how you pursue and assert yourself, across the two charts.
That’s the problem with a sun-sign-only red flag list. Two Scorpios can have completely different Venus and Mars placements. Calling a sign a red flag treats the loudest stereotype about it as the whole chart, and it isn’t.
Here’s a rough check you can run the next time a match’s sign gives you pause, using only birthdays.
Dating apps have leaned into sign-based jokes themselves, not just astrology blogs. Tinder’s in-app Astro Awards survey, run with users in India, handed out joking dating titles by sign.
Leo got “Serial Ghoster.” Aries got “Delusional Dater.” Pisces was named most likely to miss a red flag in the name of romance, according to Tinder’s own campaign recap.
It’s a fun campaign, and a clean example of the pattern. A behavior someone noticed once gets generalized into twelve buckets, then repeated until it sounds settled. What someone does on a dating app usually has more to do with their current bandwidth and habits than their sun sign.
Astrology, synastry included, is a tradition of interpretation, not a diagnostic tool. It shouldn’t replace paying attention to how someone treats you.
A chart comparison makes a fun first-date topic, but it isn’t a substitute for noticing whether someone follows through, communicates clearly, or respects a boundary. That’s the real test behind any astro dating red flags claim, not the label on a profile.
Does a rough synastry match mean a relationship won’t work?
No. Synastry looks at planetary patterns between two charts, not a guarantee of outcomes. Many long relationships involve placements astrologers call challenging on paper.
Why does Tinder’s Astrology Mode ask for a birth time?
Moon and Rising signs depend on the exact time of birth, not just the date. Without it, the app can only work out a sun sign.
Run the two birthday comparison above with your current match before your next date. It takes less time than picking an outfit.
If a sign is making you hesitate on someone you like, bring it up with them directly and ask what their placements are, instead of guessing from one label.
